The fertile land and the remarkable presence of many sacred
buildings are the two landmarks of Skopelos, the most populated
of the Sporades. This lush green paradise that lies between
Skiathos and Alonissos is heavily covered by pines. The sheltered
southeast coast harbours many beaches, most of which are pebbled,
while the northwest coast is harsher, with a predominance of
high cliffs. The tourist development has not affected its intense
traditional character. Skopelos town is charming with whitewashed
houses built around the semicircular bay on the slope of a hillside
culminating in the ruined fortress, the Venetian Kastro from
where to enjoy outstanding views. The village has an impressive
number of small churches and chapels, built by fishing families
from the island in return of the grace received from the Saints.
