Neapoli is a charming little market town situated about halfway
between Hersonissos and Agios Nikolaos. The new highway has
put this town off the map and therefore has made it an even
more peaceful location. Neapoli, that is mostly famous for being
the birthplace of pope Alexander V (early 15th century), today
is a thriving market town and the former administrative centre
for the Lassithi province. Its landmark is the beautiful church
in the tree-shaded square just off the town centre, which contains
wonderful frescoes and is open to visitors. The small crafts
and archaeological museum is worth a visit. There are several
tavernas and restaurants were to try the local specialities,
like the soumadha, a very refreshing sweet almond flavoured
drink
